Why I Will Never Be a Libertarian--Reason 3

If the market must be utterly free, then George Bush is right and there is no reason why the United Arab Emirates shouldn't control our ports.

Now now. I'm not a supporter of utterly unregulated markets, but you've oversimplified the situation. A free-marketeer would say that any reason to disqualify a company should simply be market driven. If the UAE boys will provide acceptable levels of security (to be defined) for a copetitive price, they should get the nod. Of course acceptable limits may include the odd stray nuke, but SUCH A DEAL WE GOT! It's all about the oprice you're willing to pay and the level of service you're willing to expect.

The airlines supposedly determined that it was cheaper to pay restitution for several more Lockerbies than to upgrade security to prevent one. Enjoy your flight!
