My Weird Dream

So, I often have this dream about a large Victorian house that is haunted by all kinds of scary things--in the dream, it's the house one of my friends lived in in grade school, but modified so that there's a big two story porch and some extra rooms and a scary basement, in the way of dream architecture. Usually, I live in this house. But last night, in my dream, W. had bought the house from my friend's family to live in with his brother, who is, in the dream, a professional baseball player. This is a problem, because, after they move in to the house, with my cats, his brother is being regularly possessed by a giant garden slug, and is thus in danger of losing his contract. It's up to me to exorcise the slug and clear the house of all ghosts. I mention all this as a long way of saying that I used to be a good cook. But I made my famous chicken and rice last night, a dish I've made a thousand times, and it was not very good--though the Butcher said he liked it--and it gave me indigestion and weird vivid dreams. Maybe if I could remember the exact mixture of spices, I could sell it to mystics looking for visions, but as just an ordinary cook of ordinary meals, this isn't going to cut it.

It's the season for night visions. Have your read the hilarious and endlessly interpretable "Feminist Acres" dream currently posted at One Good Thing?

Most Freudians (including my dear husband) would tell you that any dream of a house is symbolic of the self.

Dare I ask what the slug is symbolic of?

The slug means she's been listening to Atmosphere. ("Who's this one about? Who's this one about?")

Ooo. I really like the idea of the house as symbolic of the self. And that would explain why my cats stayed with the house when W. moved in.

Even more detailed, he has told me that a Victorian house symbolises wisdom anchored in the self.

So...if you dream of a Victorian house you must clean then that is symbolic of you trying to remove dross from the psyche to attain perfect wisdom.

In Freudian interpretation a slug represents the base nature of the male. (spiders represent the base nature of the female)

You have no idea how fun (combined with scary) it is to be married to a Freudian.

My brother is a bit of a slug. And a former professional professional baseball player. I'm not sure whether it's some sort of ESP on your part or I just forgot I told you that. Either way it's spooky and disturbing.

W., I think you must have told me that he played baseball. But the slug thing, my subconscious came up with that all on my own.

Spiders and slugs... hmmm... That's really cool.

But I don't want my base nature to be a spider.

I hate spiders.

So, I suppose it's fair to say that it is your dream to emasculate professional baseball players.

Not so much, no.

Trying my amateur hand at it after being a "patient" of my spouse for so long....

a large Victorian house
Female Self, imbued with wisdom

modified so that there's a big two story porch
Extremely open and welcoming nature, but with some parts being accessible only after passing some sort of test (hence the two-story part of the porch).

some extra rooms

Extra education or book knowledge

a scary basement
Basements in a "dream" house generally symbolise the sex/death part of the psyche. Especially for the female they also symbolise the uterus.

W. had bought the house from my friend's family to live in with his brother, who is, in the dream, a professional baseball player.

Welcoming or inviting men of various natures into the essential female world.

after they move in to the house, with my cats,

Cats are an animus of the female wisdom nature. B. in the dream acknowledges sharing the house of her wisdom with men.

a professional baseball player... his brother is being regularly possessed by a giant garden slug, and is thus in danger of losing his contract.

Professional baseball player being posessed by a slug would be a man who B. perceives as being a "game player" or in some way emotionally manipulative who keeps revealing his elemental male nature to her within the safety of her female realm and is therefore in danger of losing his status and standing in the male world.

But if she liberates the slug (or his base male nature) this male would be free to participate in her interior life without posing a threat to either her or his own exterior masculinity.

Of course it could all be utter bullshit, but it's still vaguely interesting.

I hate spiders.

Of course you do. Most women do. That's why they're so iconic in dreams. I always dream of spiders when I'm having conflicts with either my mother or feel threatened by other women. A spider is a perversion of the nuturer--she has many arms but uses them to entrap...she will wrap you up, but to kill you.

During the year I had a bad female boss I dreamed of spiders every night.

Kat: So if spiders are the base nature of a female, it means BASE-base, not like the 'base essence,' correct? Because I took it as the second one.

Also, I LIKE-like the Freudian interpretation of B's dream. Verrrry interesting.

P.S.: Do you have to live with everyting being interpreted like that? Because I think that's scary, too.

Welcome to why I personally am not as big a fan of Freud as is Tim. Because it means both. Depends on how you interpret it. And how you interpret it says something else about you and on and on and on.

For almost 18 years now. It was scary for about 4. Now it's almost comforting. Like a pair of shoes that always gives you a blister but still fits really well otherwise.

But annoying too. Very annoying.
