Young Buck

This morning, I'm eating my rice krispies and flipping through the various Viacom music channels and I see in the background of one of them Nashville's most infamous building: The Bellsouth Building aka The Batman Building. So, I naturally assume that I've landed on a country music channel, because who else has Nashville in the background of their videos? Well, duh, the Straight Out of Cashville man himself, Young Buck. I like him. I don't think it's just because he's from here, though it feels right to me, having Nashville reemerge on the landscape of black music. I think his songs are catchy. Anyway, I hope he doesn't go to jail.

That building is awesome!

I'm not familiar with Young Buck, but what has he done to land him on the wrong side of the law, and can he write a good song about it?

Maybe Elias will come by to explain this better than I could, but here's my understanding. Rap music is kind of a pyramid scheme. You don't make money, as far as I can tell, actually rapping. You make money by bringing other artists into the fold and getting a cut of the money they earn.

So, Dr. Dre brings in Eminem and Eminem brings in 50 cent. 50 cent brings in G-Unit (a group of rappers, but not "group" in the sense that the rap together, group in the sense of making all the folks who earn 50 cent money easily identifiable). Young Buck is a member of G-Unit, and Straight Out of Cashville is his solo debut.

At the Vibe awards last year, an autograph seeker punched Dr. Dre (as you recall, the man at the top of this particular pyramid) and Young Buck felt compelled, by loyalty to this pyramid scheme (sometimes called "the game," not to be confused with "The Game" who is another member of G-Unit), to stab the autograph seeker.

I don't know if he'll write a song about it, but, if he does, I recommend the chorus go something like "All my money goes to 50, who gives some to Em, who gives some to Dre. They're getting rich, yeah, they sittin' pretty, and I'm the one workin' every damn day."

But maybe the penalties for revealing the pyramid scheme are too great...

Oh, I meant to say, I do love the Batman Building. I once read an article in the New York Times that called Nashville "The Home for Wayward Architecture," which is both funny and true.

I do think you know everything. It just pisses me off when you don't share.
